IN 1933, Andre Citroen's business had serious
problems. He had just returned from rebuilding and totally
modernizing his factory at the Javel quay in less than 5 months
without disturbing production and now took up
his most astonishing industrial challenge. That
which will prevent Louis Renault from sleeping - the
project
to launch a truly revolutionary car which will put
him years ahead of the competition. But it is
necessary for him to act quickly before the situation
worsens. In March 1933, he employs a young engineer
called Andre Lefevre who "was bored" at Renault.
He has worked for some time already on the idea of
a car with front traction.
On 18 April 1934, the Traction Avant is presented to
dealers and the first sales take place within a
month. But it lacks development and the financial
situation at the factory has not been sorted out. Driven
to bankruptcy, Andre Citroen leaves the
factory to Michelin, his larger creditor. Tired out, he dies on 3
July 1935 without
ever seeing the success of his last creation. The
new owners at the Javel quay will finish the development
of the Traction Avant which he had wanted to do so much. The
Traction Avant's history ends on 18 July 1957 when the last example
leaves the assembly line at the Javel quay.

WE all love the 2 CV - Citroen,
of course!
Dad, Mum, Uncle George, the village priest;
everybody had one of them. Created by the clever brains of
the 1930s and 1940s, the 2 CV beat at the rhythm of
life of the French for decades. This book is the witness of the great and small moments
of this legendary car whose original purpose was quite
simply - four wheels beneath an umbrella!

PRESENTED to the general public for the first time at
the Paris Car Show on 7 October 1948, the 2
CV Citroen is part of the history of the French car.
After its prosperous life
of 42 years, its production at the Citroen factory of
Mangualde finally ceases
in July 1990. For many, though, the 2 CV did not die. In
fact, it remains
forever in the memories of those who used it. With it,
they took it each morning to their place of work. They
took it with them through dangerous situations to the
remotest parts of the earth. Today, the Citroen
2CV is a true symbol attracting people from all generations.
A true historical monument to the French car industry, this small and
quaint car retains a terribly contagious youthfulness.

WITH the 2CV, we thought
we had discovered the most basic of all cars. We were
wrong. Citroen could do better in the area of austerity.
In the same way, 2 years
after the Saloon, this light utility van is launched.
Out of step with the times and fashion, this small dromedary of
the road will tirelessly bump around the world for some
28 years, from 1950 to 1978, without any notable
changes. This light van will be manufactured in the
4 corners of the earth and will be sold practically without
any publicity. It barely appears in some catalogues.
Perfectly adapted to all climates with its air-cooled
engine, it is ideal for developing countries because of
its economy. Finally, its suspension works wonders
on all roads. Like its older sister,
the 2CV, this faithful friend of globe-trotters
will take part in road rallies around the world. Unbeatable,
discreet, indispensable, impossible to copy, nothing has
replaced
it until now. Many users regret that its simplicity and
its popularity with collectors never seems to end.

THE first European manufacturer in the 1920s, Andre
Citroen, launches two new
radically new models, the C4 and the C6, at the Car
Show of 1928. These cars contrast totally with the older
Citroens - they
are comfortable, steady, fast, elegant and almost indestructible.
They are the first really modern Citroen cars.
These constantly improved models will stay for 5 years at the top of the
French car industry
thanks to their intrinsic qualities. Good publicity, a reliable
dealer network, good exports and
superb victories at Montlhery will make the C4 and C6
legends in their day. Today, collectors
actively seek them out and nurture them with love.

THE story of a car that left
its mark. The
1st generation DS is described in this book from its
conception to its sporting victories. A large car made for luxury and comfort, it became
the uncontested champion of long and hard tests conducted
in Africa and US. Taking over
from the Traction Avant it had, from the beginning, an
insane love with the development
of the hydro-pneumatic suspension. The author analyzes
12 years of its manufacture from the first 1911 cm³
engine which gave the name to the DS 19 to
the 2175 cm³ engine, 100 HP and 100
MPH (175 kph) top speed of the DS 21. Bertoni, Opron
and Mages, in turn, re-design the
front, the headlights and the rear window, without
altering its appearance from the side. All
aspects of this production series but also the accessories
and special editions are detailed in this unique book.

PRESENTED at the 42nd Car Exhibition
at the Grand Palace, Paris in October 1955,
the DS will hold its place for
more than 20 years in the "Double Chevron"
range,
bringing so many new techniques and progress that even
today some aspects remain revolutionary. This
book, devoted to the 2nd generation DS from 1968 to
1976, presents all the changes in the range - new
front, directional headlights, electric circuits and
the DS
20 but also its evolution year by year, its everyday life, its
prizes in competitions, races and rallies. An incomparable
concept of genius
the DS will reach the four corners of the world
in 1001 versions - station-wagon, convertible,
ambulance, administrative car or special body version. At
the end of the book, technical pages list its chronological evolution and characteristics,
year by year.

FOR the Type-H one can, without making
a mistake, call it a revolution in utility vehicles. The definition
of this van was based on simple ideas: front traction,
monocoque case and an exemplary modularity. Three
ideas which are still today the basis for all utility
vehicles on the market! We have not bettered these
ideas and it is the secret of its formidable life
(from June 1947 to December 1981). The Type-H made into
a half-million examples will naturally please the industrial carriage-builders as
we will discover in this book. Lengthened,
raised, compressed and cut out, it remains unique with its characteristic pig
nose. The authors, 2 Citroen
specialists of this model, deliver an original
study together with remarkable iconography.

CREATED in June 1959, between
the post-war years of the 1950s and the exuberant, prosperous
years of the 1960s, the PL17 needed to be ambiguous
to allure
a new section of customers. It had to forget the Dyna
with its reputation of fragility and its obsolete round shapes
which had become its handicap. Lacking finance, Panhard was
not able to launch a brand new car. So it was necessary
to touch up the Dyna skillfully enough so that
it looked like a brand new model without alienating traditional
customers - and it worked. The
new front end and re-designed rear transformed it enough
to prolong its life for several more years. Interestingly, the PL17 was
grouped with the kitsch cars like the old-time Dyna X.
But this
time, it is in fashion. As well as traditional colours the customer was
offered lilac,
bush-fire red or bright yellow in strong contrast to
the more
usual colours of black, grey or dark blue. On the PL17 Tiger, it
was fashionable to order the
imitation Bengal Tiger Fur version for the interior
cloth. In this book, the reader will discover the whole
story of the famous PL17 ('17' in
1963) until its disappearance in May 1965 and about
the model which undoubtedly remains the Panhard that
first comes to mind today. Saloons, convertibles, station-wagons
and even the exotic South American versions are covered
here, without any model
or short tale overlooked, being often the most interesting.

MORE than a story, this work is a chronicle,
a collection of facts, testimonies, remarks, accounts
and anecdotes intended to awake the memory and nostalgia
of those who knew of an era
and pace of life that today reminds us of the charm of
a golden age that was never to be repeated. "Les
Routes de Chez Nous" tells the story of the
French road and its environment down through the centuries
but also about the improvement in sign-posting, orienteering
and cartography. It is also about the pioneers,
"those mad drivers", who were called
De Dion, Renault, Panhard, Jenatzy and who drove
their machines at more than 100 kph
past horse-drawn carts on the road. It is about the road
and the war, the exoduses, the invasions, the bombarded
and devastated roads, plowed up by the caterpillar tracks of
the armoured tanks. Then the time when the wheel-wrights
become mechanics, the grocers become pump
assistants and petrol stations transform themselves
into American-style service stations. The
development of road tourism, together with the production
of the plain-looking car, sees the appearance of the first
road networks and the enforcement of the Highway
code. During the 20th century, the roads become so commercialized
that it becomes impossible to avoid the advertisements,
publicities, posters, wall-paintings and magazines. Downtown, the avenues, boulevards, streets,
expressways on the sides of rivers and ring roads
multiply with their restricted parking zones and
one-way streets... This
book, which reads like a novel, finishes with the work
of some artists and painters of the car and the road
such as Rene Vincent, Ernest Montaut and Guy
Sabran, who show astonishing, rich and
colourful views of this multi-dimensional world.

A short history on the legendary Route
Nationale 5, 6 & 7 roads and the "Route Bleue"
of France. The
Paris-Riviera road is, of course, the Route Nationale
7 that everyone remembers. The sun and holidays
are the first images which come to mind when mentioned.
But also its hellish bottlenecks,
overheated traffic jams in small villages, heavily-laden
lorries
and slow caravans, cheap roadside restaurants, 3-Star
stop-overs, joys and dramas. The Paris-Riviera road also
includes the Route Nationale 6. Did you know that 3
out of 4 motorists
preferred the N6 to the N7 between Paris
and Lyon? How many took the N6 out of Paris thinking
that they took the N7? The
Paris-Riviera road is also the Route Bleue just before
Lyon where it leaves the N7 to later rejoin it at Valence. Find
out the story of the oldest route in France, the Paris-Riviera
road, across 2000 years of voyages.

PETROL companies fought endlessly
to take the lead role on the roads of France. Esso, Shell, BP,
Total are the most well-known, but we should not forget tens
of others like Azure, Gargoil, Antar, Caltex,
Lucilline, etc. It is the multi-coloured universe
of the service station and the garages that the author
tells us of. A universe where colourful publicity reigned, where service was the golden rule. A wipe
of the windshield, a word with the passenger, the impeccable
pump assistant in his uniform unhooked the pump nozzle without
you having to get out of the car. It was really the
time of the service station!
